NEW ‘7 Term Online Sanskrit Course for Yoga Practitioners’
Posted on: 10/10/2021
The ‘7 Term Online Sanskrit Course for Yoga Practitioners’ starts in January 2022, and is a new adaption of a well-established course for adults.
Why is this course special? Especially designed in consultation with the British Wheel of Yoga, it is a systematic and varied course of lessons following the Cambridge IGCSE syllabus. This ensures that all the key elements of language needed to understand traditional literature are covered. The final examination is optional, although highly recommended.
Resources: For the first two terms we use a textbook called ‘Sanskrit: An Introductory Course’. We give students access to specially made support videos, class recordings and give precise guidance for use of the many resources which are more widely available on our ISER website. The teaching medium is English.
Shape of the evening: In the first hour we study language, literature, philosophical background and points of particular relevance to yoga. After a break of about 10 minutes we form smaller breakout groups, each with its own teacher, to give opportunities for individual practice. This is an enjoyable way to relax and increase confidence with pronunciation. The focus is on chanting of Vedic Prayers and Gita verses.
The teacher: The upcoming class in January ‘22 will be taught by a British Wheel of Yoga teacher, Irena, who has spent many years studying the Sanskrit language and Eastern philosophy. She loves both, deeply, and is inspired by their complementary nature.
Irena has taught similar courses for many years and is excited to be delivering this particular course for fellow Yoga Practitioners.
Testimonials: This is a unique chance to study Sanskrit systematically under the guidance of experienced teachers. Possibly the best way to find out about the course is to hear from two BWY members who attend the first of these courses which started in Jan 2021:
‘I love the course. The teacher is friendly, encouraging, very skilled and knowledgeable; and I’ve been appreciative of the team’s support and all the helpful material that’s been provided. It’s been inspiring to have people running the course who themselves love Sanskrit, and to study with an enthusiastic group of yogis. I’d previously had a go at teaching myself – it was so much harder and drier than having a lovely weekly class to go to. The pace of the classes feels quite relaxed and the homework not at all burdensome, and yet after two terms we’ve all made good progress, I feel. Wonderful. Thank you so much!’ Kath W
‘Wonderful teachers with an amazing wealth of resources available. I can’t believe how much I have achieved already in only 6 months. The Sanskrit course is already impacting on my study of the texts.’ Vonnie B
